Another weather-impacted weekend for football, with only 4 games surviving the freeze!
SATURDAY - GIRLS
Under 8 Panthers girls braved the weather to play away at Daventry Town, but were met with an unfortunate defeat. The girls created many opportunities to score but were limited to Elizabeth tucking one in in the 1st half and another by Roop in the 2nd half. The girls demonstrated some fantastic interplay during the first half but this untangled in the second half. Each player played their part; Sundari being big and brave in goal, Poppy was formidable in defence, Jodh and Aish were extraordinary in constant attacking thrusts from the midfield whilst Avneet, Roop and Elizabeth made many shots at goal.
SATURDAY - BOYS
First game for the Under 7 Tigers in Tier 1 following their promotion at Christmas. The boys were away to Coventry Sphinx early morning on the 3G pitch. The Tigers were soon on the back foot with two goals conceded to Sphinx. However, they didn’t let their heads drop and replied with a great effort from Aryan. There were also a series of excellent saves by Archie who continues his great form between the sticks. The GNP equaliser came from a move from the back involving all 5 players; Archie, Pravir, Aryan & Arveer combined to tee up Balraj who equalised with a smart finish. Just before half time, however, sloppy Tigers marking let in Sphinx to score a couple of quick goals which GNP never recovered from. The second half saw an increase in the Sphinx lead, but there were still things to shout about, a couple of brilliant runs by Mohamed, some great defensive interceptions by Pravir, more excellent keeping by Archie and a 2nd goal for Aryan who deserved his Player of the Match award. All of the above holds the Tigers in good stead going into their next match at this level.
SUNDAY - BOYS
GNP Under 9 Lions were away against Alvis today, a match played on a 4G pitch, so it could go ahead in the freezing conditions. Alvis proved to be a very good footballing team and they played some intricate football in the first half to score 2 goals. GNP were battling well but were struggling to create. The 2nd half started off the same and Alvis added a 3rd goal. GNP then started to play some more aggressive attacking football and pulled a goal back via Sehaj. The team had a number of chances, including an audacious volley from the halfway line by Evan, which hit the post and fell into the keeper’s arms. It was great to remain competitive throughout and just a shame the boys couldn’t close the deficit, which the 2nd half performance deserved. Player of the match went to Rajan, for a solid performance in defence & midfield, evidenced by high praise from the Alvis manager, which is always nice to see.
The high-flying Under 14s were away at Bedworth Utd in the reverse of last week’s fixture, a game which was always going to be difficult after last week’s big win. Bedworth had a point to prove and, to no surprise, started quickly and deservedly took the lead. Probably best thing to happen for GNP as the boys finally realised no game is the same and came into half time 1-2 up after goals from Archie and Dylan. In the 2nd half GNP created chance after chance but could not capitalise. Luckily, Bedworth could not get the equaliser either. Final Score 2-1 to GNP. Well done to the Under 14s team, who proved again sometimes you have to grind out a result. Special mention to Zaid who had to play as emergency centre half due to an injury and nullified Bedworth’s main threat.
