Super Mario kick starts Under 13 Lions to emphatic victory!

SATURDAY - GIRLS

Under 14 Panthers were away against SJB Juniors in league action. The Panthers were missing a couple of key players but put in a faultless display with everyone putting on a top performance. SJB defended solidly but were undone when Poppy fired past the keeper from close range after Mekenna crossed into a crowded area from the left. The whole defence were solid as a unit and Harkeerat in goal was rarely troubled but commanded her area confidently and remained alert when called upon. A fully deserved victory for the Panthers who celebrated with ice creams on the hottest day of the year so far.

Under 13 Panthers were up against Leamington Lions. Very much an even match in which the Panthers deserved a draw however came away having lost. There were very few chances for either team but the Lions took theirs. The Panthers as a team however can be very proud of the they played, especially after a very heavy tackle on Mankirat. Orna was great in goal and kept the opposition out. Hannah’s tracking back was noted and Lillyrose demonstrated why she’s one of the best defenders around with her calm approach. Unlucky to have come away empty-handed, but the team performance was exceptional and girls can be proud of sticking together with no subs on a warm morning.

SATURDAY - BOYS

The Under 7 Tigers played away to Rugby Borough this week. We knew this would be a tough game but the Tigers started strong and proved a stern challenge for Rugby Borough. Early in the match, Tobias and Aron were able to drive the ball forward, enabling Rhys to shoot only to be stopped by a great save by the opposition. Joban followed up with a great strike from outside the box to take the lead for GNP. Joban and Tobias dropping back into defence again this week proved a good choice. Their ability to find the right pass into dangerous areas was great to watch. This move also enabled Rayan to make his debut upfront. Rayan is renowned for his excellent defending skills, but managed to cause a nuisance for the opposition, moving the ball quickly past them and scoring a fantastic goal showing his versatility. Once again, our leading goalscorer, Aron, got a hat trick this week. He was truly outstanding in defence and upfront. If he is not scoring, he's creating chances for others. Taran and Sahib fought tirelessly across the whole game, intercepting crucial plays from Rugby Borough and narrowly missing out on goals - we couldn't have secured victory without them. Rugby Borough made some key changes and fought back hard, creating good chances which led to several impressive goals. Lucas was solid in goal, saving shots and setting up play perfectly. Lucas also got another well deserved goal this week assisted by Taran. Once again, Rhys gave it 100% upfront and on the wing, making great runs and fighting hard to win the ball back. This passion paid off with Rhys adding to the scoresheet. The boys were promoted mid season and have delivered consistently since. With everyone improving their technical knowledge, there is no doubt they will go from strength to strength. Go Tigers!

On a sunny day at Finham, GNP Under 7 Lions faced Hillmorton in another thrilling contest. Both teams showed great teamwork, determination, and skill throughout. Thomas was rock-solid in goal, making key saves and launching attacks before coming outfield in the second half to make some fantastic runs. Elliot was a defensive wall and crowned his performance with a brilliant goal after charging forward. Dhillan's tireless energy paid off with a well-earned goal, while Kiaan impressed again with his versatility and was unlucky to hit the post late on. Jagraaj was relentless in midfield, breaking up play and pushing forward with purpose – just inches away from a goal of his own. Luca battled hard, even against the biggest player on the pitch, and helped drive the team forward. Theo had a great game on the wing, scoring with a first-time strike from a corner and later stepping into goal with confidence. It was an exciting end-to-end game, full of passion and effort from every player. Well done Lions – your progress this year has been amazing!

Under 8 Pumas were at home to Rugby Borough Hawks. We had a full squad for an early start on a sunny day. Both teams started tentatively and it was a close match, but then the opposition scored two quick goals before half time. It looked like we were headed for a loss but our squad depth meant that we could go on the attack in the 2nd half. We brought the game level and could have possibly won it, but a draw was a fair result. Well done to all the boys, especially Srihan for scoring his first goals for the team!

Under 8 Lions hosted Coventry Phoenix and put in a really polished and complete performance to come out on top. Goals came from Louie, Aaron, Sam & Leo, but the whole team were on top form in a great win. Well done boys!

Under 8 Jaguars visited Hillmorton and were in great form with some quick, decisive football, with brilliant effort all game. Goals from captain Isaac (3), Bobby (2), Oryn (2), Theo (2) & Varun sealed the away victory, with Theo named as Player of the Match. Well done again Jaguars!

SUNDAY - BOYS

Under 13 Lions finished off their league season with a visit to a dry, hard pitch in Nuneaton against Attleborough Sports Raiders. It was nip and tuck early on with Attleborough giving as good as they got. However, on 18 minutes, substitute Mario settled down the Lions with an emphatically converted penalty after Arjun's cross forced a handball in the box. They played the rest of the 1st half with confidence, but without adding a further goal, with Jasraj R coming closest when he hit the post on a breakaway. 2nd half was a more dominant display with the team passing well on a difficult surface, and given a great platform thanks to the assured play of William & Dom at centre back. A switch of play at the back allowed Arjun to pick the ball up on the left and play a delicious through ball with the outside of his right foot behind the defence; Mario's pace got him onto the ball and he broke the keeper's challenge before scoring into the empty net. Dominik continued his knack of picking up useful goals this season, latching onto Theo's pass before volleying over the keeper's dive. A nice move down the right then saw PotM Mario square perfectly for Jasraj R to tap in from 2 yards. We then added 2 more late goals from goalmouth scrambles with Arjun & Mohammed on hand to finish off the chances. A great way to end the season with 3 emphatic wins in the last 4 games, including 7-0, 6-0 and 8-0 away victories! Well done Lions!

Under 13 Tigers played Coventry Phoenix Blaze in friendly action and dominated the game from start to finish. It was truly a squad performance, with 17 players available, and 9 different goalscorers in an emphatic 9-1 win! Daniel scored his first goal for GNP after great play from Muhamadou saw him square the ball unselfishly for Daniel to tap in. Muhamadou then added a 2nd with a trademark burst from the halfway line. Aaron D scored the 3rd after a dangerous corner put in by Cinar. The early lead really allowed the team to settle and play some attractive pass and move football. Subs Oscar & Arjun played a beautiful 1-2 before Arjun dispatched a fine finish across the keeper to make it 4-0 at half time. The 2nd half saw a quick 5th goal added after a Phoenix back pass was punished with an indirect free kick. Oscar teed up Aarun S, who deftly curled the ball up and over the charging defenders into the top far corner of the net! A short backpass from GNP let in the Blaze striker who rounded the keeper to score their only goal of the game. In the final 12 minutes of the game, GNP added 4 more goals. a vicious volley from Cinar, an emphatic header by Iklil from Cinar's corner, and then 2 short range goals from Prabhvir and Harman B to round off another brilliant performance by a team now in great form!

Under 11 Lions were away against Coventry Phoenix Blaze. Lions were in dominant form and played some excellent football creating numerous chances and they were a couple of goals up through Kyle and and own goal. Phoenix pulled one back to go in 1-2 at half time. The Lions stepped it up a notch in the 2nd half and scored 4 further goals through Sehaj, Kyle, Athrv and Aaron. A pleasing performance and an emphatic result. Last game of the season next week in what has been an encouraging season in tier 2. Player of the match was Arjun for a defensive and midfield masterclass.

Under 11 Tigers were in action in the league against Coventry Sphinx White. Tigers started the first half brilliantly and had several chances, but just could not find the finish to open the scoring. First half ended goalless. 2nd half the same pattern with both teams struggling in the heat. But it was Sphinx who broke away and with a misplaced kick they took the lead. Tigers tried to get back in to the game but was not to be. Good game - unlucky in the end!

Under 9 Tigers hosted Coventrians Jaguar Youth. Evenly matched for the first 15 mins with each team not giving much away. Ollie pulled off some fine saves to keep the score level. Cov Jag however managed to take the lead as the Tigers didn’t close them down quick enough. The second half saw Cov Jag score within the first couple of mins. This however saw the Tigers come to life. Arveer started to control the midfield connecting well with passes to Veer and Rajan who would distribute to the strikers. It was this that allowed Joban to drag the ball down and slot a goal in. The defence was strong with Rivan and Salman holding the fort. Ollie pulled off one of the saves of the season with an absolutely superb stop to the top of right hand corner. The Tigers were now in full flow and Josiah got into his stride playing as a striker and managed to dribble across the area and drill one into the opposite corner. A brilliant comeback, which the boys can be proud of as we head into the last game of the season. Well done to Ollie for earning a well deserved Player of the Match award.
